I’m a “Curves” Convert
One of the things at the top of my mind in preparing for my wedding is the fact that I would like to look good in the photographs. Obviously, the first step in ensuring this happens is to choose a great photographer. Having done just that, I considered resting on my laurels and trusting him to work some magic. However, it did occur to me, hopefully not too late, that even Annie Lebovitz couldn’t make Kirstie Alley look like Christy Turlington and so I began the inevitable attempt to shape up before my wedding. Colour me purple
Choosing the colour for the wedding proved to be more difficult than I had originally anticipated. I have always loved the colour of the ocean on a stormy day have been heard to sigh “I would love a dress that colour.”
Of course, I had no real hope of finding the purpley-blue-gunmetal colour I have sighed over and had therefore resigned myself to a rather plainer shade of violet.
Blow me down, however, when I walked into Bridal Centre (yes, the very same bridal emporium which I initially refused to enter and ended up finding my dream wedding dress) to find material in the perfect shade, at R30 a metre! I am quite beside myself with joy. And, no, the irony of my inital reluctance to shop at Bridal Centre only to find two of my most important elements there has not escaped me. And how’s this for shivery? The same sales lady – there are about 20 - sold me the dress and the material! Cleary Mizz Diva + Bridal Centre = meant to be…
I have now got all excited about using this sophisticated palette and turned to Polyvore to try and express my vision. Here it is:

Save the Dates
Apparently, the idea of a “Save the Date” is quite a new one, so I’ll quickly explain the concept for those of you who haven’t heard of it: the idea is that you send out a small card to the people you intend to invite to your wedding as soon as you have decided on your date (or guest list…) This is so that guests who might need to take leave or make travel arrangements are able to do so as far in advance as possible. The Save the Date is not an invitation and therefore does not ned to have information such as time or place on it. Read the rest of this entry »
Brilliant South African Wedding Websites
There are so many wedding resources online, but two of the most useful for South African brides are www.primadonabride.co.za. and www.theweddingstore.co.za
I have found endless inspiration on primadonnabride and some very useful links. Carol, the site administrator frequently posts blocks of colour co-ordinated pictures which give ideas about how to carry a colour theme through. These colour blocks are not only interesting in terms of the colours but also have some unique ideas.

NWJ Bridal Fair
For all those brides-to-be living in Kwa-Zulu Natal, the annual NWJ Bridal Fair wil be held from 6-8 March at the Durban Exhibition Centre. Tickets cost R40.
I have been to two Bridal Fairs, both at shopping centres and found them to be very useful. There are suppliers from all over the province specialising in every facet of weddings. Although I have booked most of my major details, I am still deciding on a colour scheme, the decor, the cake, the bridesmaid’s dresses and a million other details. Read the rest of this entry »
The dress
Although I am quite a fashionista (if I do say so myself), I found the prospect of finding the perfect wedding dress quite intimidating. Having paged through several hundred wedding magazines and books, including a hilarious Martha Stewart guide published in 1984, I, unfortunately, knew exactly what I wanted.
Instead of this making me feel relaxed and happy, I was extremely worried, for in these hundreds of wedding publications, I had only seen something along the lines of what I envisioned a handful of times. Five times in a thousand pictures? Not good odds on finding ‘The One’.
I have a bit of an awkward shape in that I am an hourglass figure. Contrary to popular belief, this is not the ideal female figure. The ideal female figure these days seems to be “The Ruler” as most dresses do not account for the possibility that one’s waist might be narrower than one’s bust and hips. I also have a rather large bust and although my chest inspires envy in my friends, I would honestly trade them in any day. The reason all this is significant is that I have learnt exactly what suits me clothes-wise, and what doesn’t; the traditional boob-tube wedding dress with a full skirt just doesn’t.
For a while, I kept my fear of walking down the aisle in a dress which was not the most flattering to myself but eventually I shared with my mom and sister, Kelly. They immediately filled my Aunty Pam and cousin, Carla, in and the quest for the perfect dress began, 10 months in advance. I felt somewhat better. Surely in 10 months we could rustle up the perfect dress?
