Spring Fair in Kensington

Just a quick note to let you know that the annual Spring Fair at Rhodes Park in Kensington is taking place this Sunday, 6th September. I love these flea markets where you can browse through other people’s junk and many surprisingly grotesque wares. But as a bride-to-be, I am hoping to find some cheap ceramic pieces for my Alice-in-Wonderland décor. I saw this idea on Realsimple.com of using an old soup tureen for the flowers, and I just love it! I’m also going to be on the look-out for old teacups and saucers… Why not go have a browse yourself?

Wedding Day Part VII: Going to the Chapel and we’re…

Hi. I’m Mrz Honeysuckle. I used to blog here. *Sheepish wave* I remembered earlier that I’d never finished my wedding recaps. I have no excuses. Still, ten months later and I’m back to do it! Even though my last post was in March.

When we last left off, I was a BRIDE!

And my girls were looking just as beautiful as can be (but not as beautiful as me…) :P

If you’re wondering what that funny bulge is in Sister Honeysuckle’s skirt, it’s her knees. That’s because her shoes were so high that the first picture looked like this:

Whoa, giantess sister! So my Mom made her crouch down like a deformed person for the other photo.

It’s a mad hatter kind of party planning

It’s been months of procrastination and denial since our engagement on Christmas Eve 2008. (Not that I’m not looking forward to being someone’s Mrs., but rather I’m dreading all the work that goes into wedding planning. Many horror stories have caused heart palpitations at girls’ lunches.)

I’ve now officially entered the adult life stage of expected questions at gatherings. As soon as news broke of our engagement, standard greetings with friends changed from “Hi, how are you and Nick?” to “Hey, when’s the big day? How are the wedding plans coming along? Are you done planning the most spectacular party you’ll ever plan and for which you’ll be judged for the rest of your life?” Sigh. The thing is, I have a somewhat laid-back disposition and am easily distracted. I still don’t feel as though I fit the role of engaged-woman-with-very-important-planning-to-do. But it’s not that bad, and I am tackling it bit by bit.

Let me start by introducing myself. I am Mizz Wonderland, so named because my wedding theme is Alice in Wonderland (and I’m allowed because my name IS Alice). I am 26, a copywriter, Taiwanese, a queen of bargain shopping, and I can bake a killer paella. (Follow my blog and I may just leak my culinary secrets to you…) I’m sure these next six-and-a-bit months will fly by with lots of shopping and planning and elbow grease involved; but it will be all worth it.

I can’t wait to share it all with you.
Engaged!

It’s around the corner!

I was hoping to blog alot more in the weeks leading up to our wedding but a whirlwind of things have happened and sometimes I feel there are hidden cameras around and we’re on a reality show!  After my unexpected operation last Wednesday I suffered internal bleeding and had to be rushed back to theatre Thursday morning.  Luckily all was ok after that and I left hospital the same evening.  I’m recovering well but need a couple more days of rest so the swelling goes down.  My mom also took a turn for the worst in hospital after breaking her hip in a fall last Monday and ended up in ICU yesterday with blood clots on her lungs.  She is alot better today and all she is worried about is getting walking so she can get into her shoes that she hunted down for ages for the wedding!

I’m now left with alot of loose ends to tie up before the big day. Read the rest of this entry »

Sex & the City Hot Wedding Trend

Wedding Venue Review: Shepstone Gardens

images001

“Shepstone Gardens” is Johannesburg’s best kept secret.

If you are getting married and desire something original, different but elegant, stylish and upmarket, then “Shepstone Gardens” is the venue for you!

“Shepstone Gardens” is Johannesburg’s best kept secret.

The eclectic mix of architectural styles juxtaposed against the established Houghton gardens exudes an air of nostalgia, mystery and a very swanky New York like style setting (particularly reminiscent of the 1998 movie version of Great Expectations). This exclusive venue is a spectacular setting for a wedding that is magical, beautiful and absolutely unique. (“Shepstone Garden”  caters for functions from 30-120 guests).

If you choose to host your wedding at “Shepstone Gardens” you will have the privilege of saying your vows under the magnificent glass roof of the chapel. As the sun shines through the beautifully painted windows, and gently envelopes the guests with its glow,  you will feel as though the presence of the Holy Spirit is blessing your union.

The post ceremony drinks are served amongst the lush gardens. Your guests will be able to relax and unwind, having a cocktail and a snack whilst you and your husband are taking stunning wedding photographs. If it rains, the back up venue is a colonial style library which has a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The photographs, which you will treasure forever, will be breathtaking, and striking as there are so many wonderful photographic opportunities at “Shepstone Gardens”, that the venue if often hired out for the magazine photo-shoots, and even bridal couple who desire stunning wedding photos (without hosting their weddings at Shepstone).

The Ball Room is simply magnificent, boasting wood paneling, mirrors, columns  and arches. Subtle gold finishes add a touch of opulence and glamour.

The newly built honeymoon suite provides a great way to end a splendid wedding.

The great thing about this venue is that you have great freedom to design your own wedding. Since the venue only provides tables and chairs, everything has to be hired in. Therefore, there is a great opportunity to create an original and a fairy tale event. The possibilities here are endless!

My only suggestion is to hire a wedding planner who will be able to plan a wedding with you, whilst providing the necessary knowledge and expertise of organizing a wedding at this venue.

If you would like to view this venue, give me a call on 0834081698 for an arranged viewing.
