Hair Trials

August 13, 2008 | Posted by Mizz Honeysuckle

Or, in my case, the trial of finding a hairstylist. Yep, that’s right - I’m two and a half months away and I STILL don’t have a stylist. I feel like I’ve been a bit lazy about this, but honestly everyone keeps quoting me exorbitant travel costs that make me run for the hills and never want to come out of my safe little cave. I really want to get my hair done at the venue, because in the morning I have to oversee the setting-up of the reception hall and chapel, to make sure that everyone keeps in line with my vision (because it’s myyyyy daaaaay!!!). If I then have to get in my car and drive off somewhere to do my hair, and then drive back again, it’s (a) going to waste pretty much an hour of my day just on travel, and (b) tire me out even more, which is really not a good plan!

Which is why the stylists can quote you R1000 to come out to the venue and get away with it.

A few months ago I met up with a hairdresser who is a friend of a friend. He arrived half an hour late, didn’t answer his phone either of the times I called him during that time, and then proceeded to tell me he didn’t hear his phone ring because he was driving. Later in the conversation he mentioned that he lives five minutes away from the place where we were meeting - which means that if it took him 5 minutes to get there, he was still at home BOTH times I phoned him. Needless to say, I didn’t want to hire an unreliable liar for the most important day of my life, so I brushed him off.

The next two people were too expensive, and my regular hairdresser doesn’t travel out because she works from home and has a baby.

So in the last month I’ve just pretty much given up…which is BAD, very bad! On the upside, at least I know what sort of style I want! Something mostly down, lightly curled, and covering my ears, which are my least favourite part of my anatomy (followed swiftly by my knees). Something like these:

I also really love the look of this one, but I’d want the back part loose. The twisted hair on the crown of her head is phenomenal, though:

My obsession with photography blogs leads me to find a new idea practically every day! However, at least there’s a clear pattern emerging with the hairstyles I like, so that’s something! Now if I can just find someone to create it…

I know exactly how you feel - I have a hair stylist who I LOVE to bits and who I trust completely to do my (and my bridesmaids) hair but she wants to charge me R3 000!!!!!! Her argument is that she will be out of her salon for the day and that is normally what she makes on a month end Saturday. I am getting married about 120km from home and will be staying the night before at my venue, so dont want to drive all the way back in for my hair to be done 6 hours before my ceremony!!

Hey Mizz HS - Wow 2 months you must be so excited now!!!! It really is crazy how much they charge, but try to get the hairdresser to maybe do the MOB and MOG’s hair as well and then get them to spit the travel costs with you.

With my hairdresser, she did my bridesmaids hair first, then flower girl and then mine. Then when the three of us went for the pre wedding photos she did my mom and my mother in laws hair/makeup as well as one of my cousins.

She then touched up my hair and makeup just before it was time to go to the church.

The MOB and MOG would probably also want their hair done so either pay for the hairdressers travel (and let them pay for their own hair) as a gift or ask them to split it with you.

DONT go with a hair dresser who is not punctual - the last thing you want is a hair dresser who ruins your whole day!!!

PS I love the first style - think it would look fab on you!!! :)

Thanks, girls. See, my problem is I already have someone doing my makeup, so I can’t even have the person come out and do both and only pay one set of travel costs because it will just be for the hair! And my mom says she doesn’t care about getting hers done, and my one BM says she’s going to have a short bob and her hair is so thick you can’t do anything with it so it’s wasted on her…haha. I called my old hairdresser and she says it will just be easier if we come into the salon and all get done at the same time. But I really wanted to help set up the reception on the morning! Must learn to delegate.

Queen Bee, I love elements of ALL those styles so I’m having a hard time! Love the look of #1 except I know that side swept fringe will drive me bonkers; Looove the top of the head in #2; love the sides covering the ears in # 3….it’s hard! :-)

U can actually train ur hair to part to the side. Mine naturally goes to the middle, but moving away from that now coz I hate it. My hairdresser said that by keeping it where u want it and securing with clips it eventually learns to part that way. That’s what I’ve done and I now have mine parted to the side. I combed it where I wanted after washing and also slept with it where I wanted. It took about 3 weeks to learn ;-)

I love that! But what I meant was that the hair in my face will drive me nuts. The side parting in itself is no problem!

I know QB, I am fretting about it myself but what do I do?? I have been going to this hairdresser for a while now and completely trust her. Do you think I should find someone in the area that comes recommended by the venue, at the risk of using someone I dont know? My hubby-to-be thinks so.

Wendz, I think that might be worth looking into, at least. You should be able to get recommendations or opinions from other brides, hopefully, to see if they’re any good. My sister had her hair done (and ours) at her destination wedding by a stylist she’d never met before, and it turned out great.
