As a wedding planner, wedding budgets are extremely important to me. I encourage my clients to be very realistic from the beginning. It maybe a very difficult thing to come to terms with, but rather have a fainting session at the beginning of the planning process; set firm limits and stay disciplined through out. If you are planning your wedding over 12 month period, you can forecast the expenditures and pace yourself.
Prioritize your expenses and be willing to compromise on some items. Be very open about your budget with the service providers. Trust me, people are willing to negotiate and meet you half way, but it will have to come from both directions. If you are realistic and express your desires, as well as your limitations…. you and the professionals can work out a plan where both parties benefit.
My main advice is: Be very careful of the small things… your petals, ring pillows, lunches with bridesmaids, and even your patrol costs of driving all over to the city trying to find that perfect ribbon. Do shop around, but try to do it sensibly. Try and see if you can make certain things yourself: stationary, decor, petals, etc. The key is being resourceful!
One does not need a big budget to achieve a sensational wedding. A big budget, without careful management can be wasted without resulting in a fabulous wedding. A little creativity goes a long way. The reality is that not everyone has the luxury of hiring a wedding coordinator who can guide them through the process
Being creative and willing to put extra time can translate in saving a lot of money on such things as the Decor. For example, get together with your bridesmaids and other willing participants and go on the flower arranging course! This way, you will have a FABULOUS time, you will learn a new skill, you will be able to do your own flowers KNOWING that things wont go wrong!
If you are saving on your stationary, think about having a scrapebooking evening with your friends and get 10 people together and each would have to make 10 invitations = 100 invites… you can have music, wine and loads of laughter…
