3 day wedding weekend

My engagement ring is still sparkling on my left hand, and my little head is full of ideas for my wedding.  My fiance and I have not yet set a date (blush), but we have started weighing our options.

We are both pretty keen on the idea of having a weekend wedding, you know the kind of wedding that starts on a Friday morning and ends on the Sunday evening.  I have always loved those American flicks where the whole family gets together, and they play a game of American football or croquet before the wedding.  Is it just a nice, fancy dream, or can we really pull it off as well as Tinseltown?

We anticipate that we should only have about 60 guests at our wedding.  These will be our closest friends and family and they are from all over the place.  Some are from Durban, others Johannesburg, a few Cape Tonians and even a handful from the UK and one couple from Oz.  This is one of the reasons we want to have our wedding over three days, because we haven’t seen a lot of our guests for ages and it will be nice to catch up.

We haven’t quite worked out the logistics, but we both agree, that a weekend wedding in the Drakensburg, or near the beach (perhaps even Muldersdrift) would be a good option.  Especially for our overseas guests, to show them how beautiful South Africa is.

This is what Im hoping for:
I want to book a venue, excusively for us and for the whole three days.  On the Friday, I want all my guests to arrrive and just chill by the pool and relax, that evening I’d like to have our hen and bulls party, but nothing too hectic as the wedding will be the following day.

On the morning of the wedding, I’d like to organise a fun sporting event for the guests, something where they can relax and get to know each other before the wedding.

The ceremony will probably start at around 4pm with a small service, and then have our reception with dinner, dancing and the whole shabang.

On the Sunday, I want everyone to just sit by the pool and not rush to go back home.  It will also give us time to thank all our guests and chat with them properly, when all the stress levels would have dropped.

Ive never known of someone to have such a long wedding, and I haven’t ever been to one, but the idea of it in my mind is delicious and I hope I can pull it off.

I stumbled upon a really cool website of a couple doing something like this http://www.africanwedding.co.za. They’ve put together a whole programme for their guests, which is such a great idea.

  • Oh that sounds SO fantastic! I always liked this in American movies too – I just thought that no one ever did it here! But I would love to attend a wedding like this. The thing is, who pays for all the accommodation and food? My sister had her guests stay over at the Berg on the night of the wedding, and it cost her a LOT. And she only had about 38 people there.

  • Its a fab idea! I think these days, most people would pay thier own way for the accommodation. With our wedding, people stayed over, but they sorted out their own accommodation – would love to spoil them all, but really a wedding costs MEGA MEGA bucks (were still recovering from the expenses :P).

I remember someone telling me about a Mauritius wedding they went to and the bride and groom organised a great package rate from the travel agency, becuase it was a lot of people, and each couple paid their own way and made a holiday-type of it.
