I would like to write about the ceremony today… Earlier I met with a bride and her 3 bridesmaids. The bride is a very sweet girl in her early 20s. She is very beautiful and a quite girl. We were going through the details of the wedding when I suggested that we needed to talk about the ceremony. The bride looked at me in total horror and confessed she does not know much about the ceremony and her bridesmaids rolled their eyes giggled and declared that they have to intention of standing there for a long time… so no long/drawn out sermons PLEASE!

This saddened me a great deal. After all, the ceremony is the reason why the whole thing is happening. Otherwise, you might as well just go out to a restaurant for a meal! Ok… I am finished venting. (I know that not everybody is like that)
Even though much of your planning and worry will go toward the reception, the ceremony is the heart of your wedding day. It is during the exchanging of vows before witnesses what your marriage truly takes place, ripe with the traditions and customs of your preference. The beginning of the ceremony is the moment when the bride vows the crowd and especially her groom! And it ends in the union of two souls that made a commitment in the sacred and holy presence… A wedding ceremony is magical.
We are all familiar with the generic and Hollywood popularised wedding set up a thousand times. However, if you are putting great deal of effort in creating a stunning theme – the ceremony is the perfect opportunity to create the ‘IT’ moment that will leave your guests breathless. It is your challenge not only WOW with your attire (which of course you will), but also keep them interested, keep them guessing. People are closet romantics and EVERYBODY loves the feeling of profoundness and utter beauty.
Your music, your readings, your vows… see it as your opportunity to touch and soften the heart of the coldest individual. Your love is powerful and on the wedding day you can make miracles happen… It is very important to set the scene.
Whether you choose a raw space, indoor/outdoor or a traditional venue, you have to create a setting (YOUR stage) the minute the guests arrive. I advise the bride to consider the setting and the floor plan very carefully. I would even say it is a blue print to the entire experience. The layout is very important for creating the mood and creating the backstage to your wedding.
Having said that, I do not mean blow your budget on flowers and decorations. “God is in details”… so think about the details you can create to put a personal touch.
Here are some ideas:
- For the outdoor wedding consider tying a rose (with the ribbon that ties in with your wedding scheme) around trees.
- Make simple wreaths and hang them around the ceremony place or behind people’s chairs and pin beautiful and inspiring quotes.
- For the chapel you can find the fabric that matches your colour scheme and place it down the aisle
- Crystals and beads create a wonderful sense of dimension. These can be a single colour or combinations… strung on the ribbon of choice, and can vary in size.
- Candles are the easiest and the most effective way to create romantic atmosphere (place your candles in lanterns or glass vases, so you do not have to worry about them blowing out, or the venue burning down. Chaos and mayhem would rather spoil the atmosphere you are trying to create)
One last thing… it is important to maintain symmetry though, as all eyes should direct to you! Too many details all over the place will let the gazes wonder. Think of the lines that will draw the attention towards the focal point.

Great post! I think people do forget about the ceremony in the reception decor detail worries!
Your picture terrifies me - I would not walk down an aisle in a floaty white dress if there were candles so close on either side! :-)
Ooooppps sorry… hmmm how to input a picture?

OH NO sorry you guys, I have no idea how to input a picture…… I tried all the ways possible ?
Yeah, mine worked if I put in the web address from a general website, but not from my pc or a facebook pic…
I tried that, I have my albums on photobucket, and then tried all 4 links they give…. I tried it with and without the add image link at the bottom. But no luck ?
I must be doing something wrong ? You on facebook ?
But of course, how else could I survive? :P It was me that commented on your venue wall post on the brides buzzing group - I have the green witch from Wicked as my profile pic. I should friend you! *Goes to do that*
As for photobucket…nooo idea why it’s not working!
Mizz CL, you are trying to link the page, not the image URL…. You need to open the image, right click, select properties and copy and paste that URL into the [IMG] tag or it wont work :)
THANK YOU Mrz Queen bee, I really appreciate it!! I was feeling so dumb…
THANK YOU very much! I will give it a try…
