A new take on wedding cakes

Are you looking for a fresh approach to the traditional wedding cake? Don’t like fruit cake? Then why not try one of these wonderful ideas…

‘Cake’ or ‘Cheese’?

I saw this idea for a wedding ‘cheese’ in a bridal magazine a while back. While cutting the cheese is a bit different than cutting the cake, I do think it is a wonderful alternative to the traditional wedding cake. We have decided to go this route and we will be cutting and serving the cheese directly after the ceremony for the guests to snack on while we have some photos taken. Three types of cheese rounds (in our colours, of course!), will be stacked on top of each other and decorated with flowers and rafia. With the cheese we will be serving crackers, fruit and preserves, as well as a nice red wine to compliment the cheese. Here are some pictures of how you can dress up a cheese!

If you still prefer a sweet confectionary cake, one of the following might be an option:

Croquembouche

Literally meaning “Crack in one’s mouth” a croquembouche is a traditional French wedding cake consisting of puff choux pastry filled with a vanilla creme patissiere, held together with a delicious cobweb of caramel. Delicious with coffee or wonderful as a dessert.

Individual Cakes

The options here are only as limited as your imagination! Go for cupcakes stacked in a tier, petit fours arranged on a beautiful cake stand or have individual cups of moulded chocolate filled with decadent chocolate mousse!

Chocolate Fountains

For the bride that likes her guests to interact with their food and the other guests, this is a good option! Make sure you have plenty of fresh fruit for dipping, and add some marsmallows for the sweet toothed among your guests. These days the chocolate can even be coloured to fit with your theme!

So there you have it! No need for you to have a fruit cake that no one will eat; serve your wedding cake (whether cupcakes or a chocolate fountain) as desert and all your guests will swoon!!!

    Hello

We had a chocolate fountain as part of our dessert for our wedding 2 weeks ago and people are still speaking about it. It was something different and really enjoyed by both old and young.

What a lovely post! the new styles of cakes are amazing these days. I must say, I love the choc fountain concept. However, the cheese cake, although I love the idea, I have been told it stinks a lot. I would love to hear other peoples experience on this….

We are having a winter outdoor wedding and the cheese ‘cake’ will be served directly after the ceremony. I am hoping that since it is cold, and that it will be outdoors (so the smell won’t be contained!), it won’t smell too much! I will let you know after the big day!!!

The chocolate fountain idea is very appealing for me. Has anyone had this before? Is it practical?

It cost us R650.00 instead of the R4500 for the fruit cake we thought we wanted.

HMMMM Beware the chocolate fountains and that very expensive dress of yours. Its a messy business and frankly if you ask me , not quite an attractive option to have at a wedding. Much like a chocolate fondue at a divine dinner party… sorry people, forgive me but a big no on me heheh seen too many disasters there.
