Some advice on make-up

April 7, 2008 | Posted by Mrz Orchid

I completely agree that a trial is important and for absolute peace of mind, hire a professional.  On my wedding day I had a make-up artist do my face while my bridesmaids did their own. It was a mistake!

In my photos I look fresh faced while my bridesmaids look greasy with smudged eyeliner and faded lipstick.

So I recommend getting your makeup artist to do the entire wedding party. I am a makeup artist myself and I always suggest clients go for a natural, classic look.

Many of my clients bring along pictures from magazines but the truth is, the entire look was created specifically for the model in the picture and won’t necessarily be right for you.

Discuss options with your makeup artist but at the end of the day, the look should be what YOU want.

The nice thing is a makeup artist will almost always come to your venue so that makes one less thing for you to worry about. If you do want to do your own makeup, at least go to a professional and learn how to do it. And remember that makeup is always done after hair so make your bookings accordingly.

I agree, the whole bridal party shld be done by a professional make up artist.

Budgets do tend to get a bit out of hand at weddings, so its understandable if u can’t aord to pay for it all. I paid for my bridesmaids dress, so paying for hair and make up on top of that would have been too much. Luckily my bridesmaid was very understanding and didn’t mind paying for her own hair and makeup.

If u can aford it go for it, if not ask them to pay for it themselves or even go halves? The moms also want to look fab, so ask them to contribute for theirs and get ur make up artist to do everyones make up but the u pay for their travel fees to get there as u wld be using them in anycase ;-)

How much do make up artists generally charge?

It depends on how experienced a makeup artist is. Junior artists charge anything from R150 while highly experienced artists can charge over R1000! I had a client once tell me that she got a quote for R2000 and that was just for the bride! Try to find one that offers group rates or discounts if you book more than 1 face.
